Set in Japan a few decades ago when the country was undergoing rapid residential and industrial development, Pom Poko follows the story of the tanuki, raccoon-like animals that are personified in this anime.

The tanuki have their separate clans and live in different natural reserves across Japan. They can transform into anything they want – even humans! – and legend has it that they've used this talent to coexist with real humans for centuries.

With their homeland threatened by the development projects, the different clans each with their own stars and skills band together to thwart them – which involves perfecting the art of impersonating humans and frightening the workers away.

However, there are differences between the clans and within the clans themselves, so can the tanuki unify and organise themselves in time? Or are they fighting an inevitable process of human advancement?

In no other Studio Ghibli work is there such a combination of charm and character. From the transformation sequences, to the wise words and well wishes of the elder tanuki, to the brashness of the younger generation, there's enough fun and sentimentality to suit everyone. Not everything is laughter and merriment however, as the serious issues of ensuring survival, equality and welfare amongst the tanuki is debated.

Filled with energy and delightful character interaction, while remaining true to the Ghibli tradition of pro-environmentalist tendencies, Pom Poko is Ghibli at its most creative.
